Apple Music has launched a new tool that allows users to import their playlists from streaming platforms such as Spotify.
The new tool was beta-tested in Australia and New Zealand and is now available in the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, and Mexico.
Users can find it by heading to Music settings where they will find an option called Transfer Music from Other Services where they’ll be prompted to sign into the streaming service they want to import from and select the items they want to bring over. Find out more about the tool here and how to use it here.
The news arrives at a time when numerous musicians and labels are pulling their music from Spotify. Among acts like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Xiu Xiu, electronic music label Kalahari Oyster Cult recently pulled its music from the streaming giant following reports that co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek’s Prima Materia venture capital fund was heavily investing in defence company Helsing, which specialises in artificial intelligence–driven military technologies.
Among Spotify's other controversial investments, it also donated $150,000 to Trump's inauguration.
Spotify has long been criticised for its low royalty payouts, despite reporting an increase in paid subscribers to 268 million and a total revenue of €4.1 billion. Last year, the company moved to demonetise all tracks on the platform with under 1,000 streams.
All of this prompted Björk to describe Spotify as "probably the worst thing that has happened to musicians".
