Miguel Azevedo A.K.A. Insical has an elusive background, coming from the distant outdoor raves of Portugal, where he grew up until 19 years of age. And from the basements and clubs of London, where he spent 6 years studying and absorbing all the electronic music culture he could to hone his craft. He moved to Los Angeles in 2017 to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, working as a composer, sound designer and engineer, which includes a collaboration with the legendary band, Rabbit In The Moon and working full-time for Insomniac Events' media department.
Here are Insical's top 5 inspirational tracks:
DJ Dextro - 1991
Minimalism at its best. This is one of the earlier "dark" techno tracks that absolutely got me hooked. It tells an amazing story with so little. The balance between pleasing synth rhythms and eerie atmospheres was something that captivated me deeply and it reflects itself in my sound to this day.
Ejeca - Cell Block
Pure rhythm. This is the kind of simple rhythmic track, with the right kind of to-the-point sound design that is an absolute dancefloor killer. I love how the dynamics of the track keep you on edge and eager for the next move.
Also, this kind of sound resembles Truncate a lot, so he definitely deserves an honorable mention here!
Hioll - HAV1239
The perfect blend of a strong bass foundation with highly psychedelic sounds. An intriguing blend of atmospheric and rhythmic textures that feel like you're on an interstellar voyage. This was hugely inspiring to me as it showed how you can have something that's very powerful and in-your-face that yet feels thought-provoking and introspective.
Florian Meindl & Anml Mthr - Mindhunter
You can't beat a good 303 sequence coupled with a mad synth sequence to create an amazing rave aesthetic that has equal parts nostalgia and modernity. A banger of a track that's a guaranteed fist-pumper and bass-facer.
Developer - Night Workerz
Absolutely muscular track that isn't afraid to break the rules of what constitutes a powerful dance floor tool. I love when sound design makes you wonder whether you're hearing original synth sounds or samples from an 8-bit console fighting game. The buzzy rhythmic synth tickles my brain in the absolute best way possible.
