Hi Sherm! Thanks for talking to 6AM, how are you doing?
Superb! Yes I said superb baby!!
To start off with, you have an upcoming single, “Set It Up” which is set to debut on Uprise Music, can you share what makes this track uniquely different from your previous releases? What aspects are you most excited for your audience to experience?
It’s an evolution of my underground sound in many ways. In almost all of my tracks, I have signature sounds that I always love to use. A bongo, a bass wobble, synth stab, unique breaks, catchy vocal chops, etc. “Set It Up” is the most high quality tech house roller that I’ve ever made and you can really feel the difference and improvement in quality. Usually I try to keep tracks within certain time constraints but the bassline and rhythm that became part of the final product demanded an extended track. I’m really excited for people to ride the wave of the track from start to finish.
In your opinion what do you think catches a dancer's attention with the track “Set It Up”?
The vocals for sure. They ebb and flow with the instrumental in such an energetic way. This is truly a dancer’s track because you cannot help but move to the beat. The vocals keep you entertained during the breaks and builds - trust me, you’ll know right away what I’m talking about.
You've been significantly involved with Chicago Music Nexus. Can you describe how this event has enhanced your efforts to support local artists in Chicago, and what impact has it had on the community?
vCMN is a very special event for not only Chicago but also the entire dance music space in the US. My partner, Olivia Mancuso, is a fellow podcaster and entrepreneur who shares the same sentiment as me when it comes to collaborating with other like-minded artists and professionals in the space. There’s too much gatekeeping and not enough teamwork for most artists in the beginning stages of their career. CMN is meant to help those who are truly serious about building a long-lasting career by giving them a space to learn on how to actually make that happen. It’s so much more than releasing music and playing shows. You need to know how to work with and sometimes against the system in order to create a better future for the industry as a whole.
As someone passionate about nurturing local talent, how do you identify and choose which artists to support through the Chicago Music Nexus? Are there specific qualities or criteria you look for?
CMN is for anyone who wants to further their career. A ticket for CMN will guarantee you the chance to network with established artists, managers, label heads, and entrepreneurs. It will also help you acquire the tools and knowledge to further your career through our panels and learning sessions. We expect tickets to sell out relatively quickly so make sure you keep an eye on the CMN IG page @chicagomusicnexus
Having supported major artists and performed at renowned festivals, what are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned throughout your career? How have these experiences shaped your approach as both a DJ and an A&R?
It’s so important to be your biggest fan. It can be a bit demoralizing when you feel like you put so much work into your art only to be let down by little to no feedback or engagement. But that is not what this is about.. It’s about enjoying what you do and knowing that your art can make someone smile, laugh, or maybe even cry. But you made them feel something and that is what leads to a fulfilling life as human freakin’ being - FEELING. Surround yourself with people who support you in music and sometimes more importantly OUTSIDE of this industry.
Having these experiences - ones of success and failure - gave me perspective on how to approach the next steps in my career. While I’m an extremely hard worker and hungry for success, I know that it’s not supposed to happen overnight and I need to accept that. We all want it now and so many of the artists I work with as A&R wanted it on day 1… the key is to stay humble and recognize what stage you are at now and work towards becoming the artist you want to be. Don’t act like that future version of yourself now because it’s a dark road where you might end up being successful but with no one by your side. Nahhh that’s not me. I want to share these moments on my journey with people and not cut corners.
Thanks for taking the time with us! Looking ahead, what can you share about your plans for the remainder of this year? Are there any new projects, collaborations, or events that you're particularly excited about?
Like I said above I think it’s really important to take time for yourself outside of music! I’m going on a trip to Spain with my wife and Italy with my family in early fall. Traveling is my biggest passion and I find when I experience different cultures around the world I gain perspective on what’s most important in life. It all comes back to music eventually in many different ways though! Music wise I am always up to something… expect an EP with Hood Politics in June, some special Chicago shows including North Coast mainstage, and the next level for my podcast “Sherm In The Booth”. Appreciate the love for “Set It Up” and getting more of my story!!
