Hi Helang! Thanks for talking to 6AM how are you doing?
Hi, I’m doing well- thanks for having me! Summer is around the corner and I am looking forward to releasing new music and playing more shows… this year has been filled with lots of ups and downs so far but I am eager to play it forward and see what else it has in store for me.
Your forthcoming EP, "Lovers Of The Unknown," promises to showcase the breadth of your signature sound. What can listeners expect in terms of sonic exploration and musical evolution compared to your previous releases?
This EP definitely is a special one for me and my listeners because not only is it my first EP release, it also shows the versatility in my productions and how they really resonate with my sonic visions, love for exploration, and crossing boundaries. My fans know me as a techno dj, but my musical journey actually started with me being classically trained on the piano and singing since I was a child. Given those factors, a lot of my productions can be seen as a blend of emotional yet hard-hitting chords, acid, and rumble bass lines topped off with sexy and haunting vocals. Since my first release in 2022, I’ve definitely grown a lot as a sound selector and producer and you can definitely hear that in this EP.
You built your own label, Dauntless Records, in 2023. What inspired you to take that step and what kind of creative freedom does it offer you?
I started my own label in the summer last year because I want to be able to release music consistently without having to deal with potential creative and legality restrictions from releasing on other labels. I truly believe in the importance of sharing my art freely, and although it is hard at times as an up and coming independent artist, I know that my music heals my soul and establishes my purpose in this world. In doing so, I strive to help inspire others and make them feel like my music gives them a safe space to express themselves as well. It is also empowering to self-release because it gives me the freedom to push boundaries and be experimental with my productions.
As the founder of Dauntless Records, how does your experience in curating music for your label influence the way you approach your own productions, especially within the context of your upcoming EP?
I would always try to encourage people to be themselves, stick true to making music that they genuinely enjoy and resonate with, and that’s how I approach my own productions. It’s not easy sometimes because the music industry has shifted a lot these days, and sometimes we have difficult choices to make at the risk of disturbing the flow of our creative processes. But in the end of the day that is a choice- and I do think that staying true to ourselves is what will give us the longevity and continued inspiration in what we do.
You've performed alongside industry giants and garnered recognition from established names. How have these experiences shaped your approach to music production and performance?
I am very grateful to have opened/supported so many of my idols. Playing at shows is one of my biggest sources of inspiration- watching other artists who have come a long way do their thing is an incredible sight to witness. These moments have shaped me as a producer and performer by giving me the courage to be myself. I think when you’re in the midst of all the chaos, it’s easy to get down on yourself and wonder if you’re “doing enough”, but when you get to see someone in action and then meet them and actually get to know them as human beings, you realize that despite the years of touring and releasing massive hits, they are still someone just like me, which is a very humbling experience every time- I take that energy into the studio with me and just let my emotions out the way I want to.
You describe your music as "an eclectic fusion of ethereal tones and pulsating rhythms." Can you elaborate on your creative influences and how they contribute to this unique sonic blend?
Like I’ve mentioned before, my background in classical piano and singing has shaped my influences and inspirations a lot- often you can hear in my live sets and productions that I love combining a thumping bass line with ethereal vocals. Yes, there are times for stripped back, minimal grooves but it wouldn’t be a “Helang” set without some emotive elements in there ;)
Thanks for taking time with us. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I would just like to encourage other up and coming artists out there to keep striving towards your goals. It was a tough career path to follow, but whatever happens you just gotta stay curious and do the damn thing- do it because it makes you feel alive. Do it because it gives you a sense of purpose, the motivation to get out of bed, and to become the best version of yourself.
