Jesusdapnk talks to 6AM about finding inspiration everywhere, groovy jazz influences, and the story-driven escape of his new album "Summer Heartstrings"!
Hi Jesusdapnk! Thanks so much for talking to 6AM how are you doing?
Hey guys, I am doing great! Thanks for having me. I’ve just been working and getting ready for a little staycation. Much needed with the weather coming in now. Nothing like an ice-cold drink poolside.
You've been consistently featured among the best Deep House and Jackin House artists on Traxsource over the years. What drives you to keep pushing boundaries in your music, and how do you stay inspired to evolve your sound?
It’s really been an amazing feeling to get recognized throughout the years as one of the Best Deep House and Jackin House artists on Traxsource. To be honest, it’s hard to say how my sound continues to evolve and how I stay inspired. I guess the way I produce is more based on emotion than on thinking about what I can do and how I can evolve. I don’t always think I’m going to make a deep house track, I’m the type of producer that just sits down and lets my mindset and mental health guide the track. I guess my drive comes from using music production to take care of my mindset and mental health, and somehow I can’t stop turning to music when I feel stressed, after a long day, or just bored. I know the music I make will always find its way.
But I do sometimes get random ideas in my head, or just walk by and see or hear things that can inspire a music idea. Sometimes I like to listen to old jazz and 70-80’s radio stations on public radio, and I’ll hear something I’ll want to sample. My inspiration comes in all different ways and sizes. I always have thousands of thoughts running through my head, and music is my way of release and communication. I don’t often keep up with the trends of how music evolves; I just stick with what I make. If it sounds fresh, old school, unique, etc., then I’m just cool with it and I’ll find a way to release it.
As the founder of Good Luck Penny, you've created a platform for deep house excellence. What vision do you have for the label's future, and are there any exciting upcoming projects or releases we should keep an ear out for?
Yes, I have many projects planned for Good Luck Penny. I’m currently in the process of re-envisioning the label, including cover art and physical media instead of just digital releases. In 2025, I will personally be releasing solely on Good Luck Penny Recordings and will start uploading more of the catalog, as well as new releases, onto Bandcamp. I will still sign with other labels if I feel a track I make has a sound for a specific label, but in 2025 I’m prioritizing GLP—it’s time. This year, I took the year off with GLP as I had too many things going on at once and just too many things on my plate overall. The album alone halted many pending projects and collaborations, as I put all my time into the album for the last year and a half. Keep an ear out for fresh Jesusdapnk tunes on GLP, ranging from deep house, fine house, jackin house, drum and bass, indie electronic, and jazz.
Incorporating jazz, funk, and soul into your deep house tracks has given your music a unique and distinctive sound. How do these genres influence your production process, and can you share a specific example where these influences shine through in your work?
I would say jazz is incorporated a lot in my music, specifically in my drums and melodies. Jazz drums are always grooving and never repetitive. When I produce my drums, I go into real specific details on how they sound, how they groove, and making them shine. I separate every drum I use and always add extra elements to break the monotony of a simple groove. When I record my drums, I separate every channel and every instrument I use, recording for the entire track duration. If the track is five minutes long, I will be recording for five minutes, just jamming on the drum pad with my fingertips or samplers. Doing long recordings makes the drums have more feeling and groove, as it’s not just the same loop throughout. My swing will sometimes be off, and there will be naturally different grooves. That’s an example of how I incorporate jazz in my drums specifically.
Regarding my inspiration with jazz in my melodies, I naturally gravitate towards deep synths, tragic chords, and smooth piano keys. I’m a very emotional producer, and nothing keeps my heart and mind at ease like jazzy and soulful melodies. When I incorporate funk inspiration, it’s usually in my bass lines. I always go for funky bass lines that stand out. Just like with my drums, I record my bass lines for the entire track duration. I’ll be jamming on keyboards the whole time to capture that grooving bass. The way I play keyboard is very rhythm-based, so when I jam making bass lines, you will definitely hear a funky groove with different velocity on every key hit, all depending on how much I’m grooving while jamming. This is the way I produce for the various genres I end up making.
You have a new album coming out, "Summer Heartstrings". Can you share the inspiration behind the title and how it reflects the vibe of the tracks? What themes or moods did you aim to capture with this release?
The inspiration for my album Summer Heartstrings was really just making an album that’s smooth, sultry, and relaxing. And just because it’s smooth and relaxing doesn’t mean you can’t get down to it and dance. I produced the album in a way that’s like a movie. If you listen to the extended mixes, each song transitions into the next naturally; it flows like a movie. It has its intro, bridge, climax, and ending. I made this album so a listener can just press play and enjoy it from beginning to end as a cohesive story. I’ve always enjoyed albums like that. Some examples I can name would be Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Daft Punk’s Homework, and Justice’s Cross, just to name a few. In my opinion, albums shouldn’t just be an accumulation of various tracks. An album should have a vibe and feeling overall, and the tracks should be able to work together.
Regarding the mood, as I’ve stated, it’s a very chill album—something you can play after a long day, while you work, lounge, or even party. The title Summer Heartstrings embodies the whole vibe, feel, and story of the album, and it’s also the first track on the album.
What inspired the creation of "Summer Heartstrings"? Were there any specific experiences or influences that shaped the sound of this album?
The cohesive story of some albums always inspired me. I love to produce things with a story and feeling. I’m a big movie guy, so sometimes music will incorporate a vision in my mind of what a song can allow me to see or serve as a source of inspiration.
Some specific experiences that shaped the sound of this album are simply the state of the world today. We are surrounded by constant death, stress, financial crisis, economic mess, and on the brink of various wars, apart from the ones already ongoing. You turn on the TV nowadays or look at your phone, and it’s nothing but constant tragedies, death, drama, and problems. It can drive a person mad, fearful, stressed, and anxious.
This album is a bit of an escape from everything. It’s something you can put on to just escape your problems, stresses, and down mindsets, relax, or just enjoy and dance. It’s quality house music that isn’t too invasive and can allow your mind to just stimulate and enjoy. Music is always a good solution for me and mental escapes, especially chill grooves.
Without giving too much away, what can listeners expect from "Summer Heartstrings"? Are there any standout tracks or unique elements that you’re particularly excited about?
Listeners can definitely expect to relax and chill while listening to this album. As I’ve stated, it’s an album that is more on the chill side, still grooving but not invasive, and it works for any occasion really. It’s hard to pin down one standout track as I feel proud of all of them. I’ve said before in other interviews that ‘Dance With Essence’ is my personal standout. I’ve been on an acid house trip, and that track is just solid deep acid house. But really, I can’t confirm it will always be my favorite standout track on the album.
I’m excited about this album because it works for any occasion and has something for everybody, as the album features multiple genres. From deep house to jackin house to jazz house to acid house to electronica and indie electronica. And as I’ve stated as well, the album is made to be heard from beginning to end, just letting it play out.
Appreciate you taking the time once again. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Nothing more. Just wishing tons of love and good vibes to everyone. Thanks again for having me!
