Los Angeles underground Techno is more than music; it’s a cultural movement. A language that is spoken between strangers under moody lights and mystical fog, where the space is a refuge and a protest against conventional entertainment. 6AM and SYNTHETIK MINDS strive to push boundaries, transcending the limitations of a typical brand identity and becoming a direct voice of change. Partners Jia Wang and Marco Sgalbazzini took their personal motivations and unwavering love for techno to transform the warehouse from within. When asked, “Why do you do what you do?” the answer was anything but simple. Rejecting superficial motives, their focus remains on honest intentions that help move the scene forward. In many ways, both event groups return to the fundamentals: reestablishing a genuine human connection to the music and the community in order to uncover the true purpose behind their work.
Since its inception, 6AM reinforced kindness as a way to effect change - an often-overlooked quality overshadowed by ego, fame, and common arrogance. By making compassion a foundational principle, 6AM exemplified what many were thinking: inspiring a new sense of integrity and character to the dance floor. Wang articulated his philosophy clearly when he stated, “Being nice and kind is so underrated in our scene that this is sort of our standard. If an artist is talented and draws a large following, but is a terrible person or simply difficult to work with, we won’t consider them a part of our culture.” His eloquent perspective inspired the Los Angeles techno community to look beyond the music itself and allow genuine communal values to take shape.
While Wang reinforced the importance of kindness, Sgalbazzini explored the deeper meaning of the connection between the music and the community. Challenging the culture of passive consumption, his efforts centered on cultivating authentic intentions in and out of the warehouse. He used the power of immersion to create more mindfulness, an approach that influenced the audience's interaction with one another and the music. Sgalbazzini expressed his view when he said, “Synthetik Minds reflects a different facet of that vision, but the core remains the same: creating spaces where the music leads, where presence matters, and where the culture is experienced rather than performed.” Surrounded by hypnotic sounds and a shadowed atmosphere, that sense of connection begins the moment your feet touch the cold pavement.
6AM and SYNTHETIK MINDS are in a constant state of evolution. Exploring new ways to enhance the rave experience, they eliminate distraction and obstructions to regenerate a brighter, renewed vibe. They are the first and only collective to put stickers on phone cameras and implement a “no talking on the dance floor” policy, encouraging the audience to remain present and fully engaged with the music.
Additionally, cigarette smoking is prohibited on the dance floor as part of broader efforts to minimize pollution and maintain a cleaner environment, while respecting the notion that cigarette smoke bothers fellow ravers and that really matters. These deliberate policies establish boundaries and accountability, allowing both groups to refine the rave from within. In doing so, they inspire a stronger sense of social consciousness around the culture and create an environment where the audience can enter the mystical world of techno without interruptions.
Also, 6AM and SYNTHETIK MINDS provide jobs for many and transform the workplace dynamics into an ecosystem of innovation. Demonstrating their appreciation, both collectives make their employees and volunteers feel like family. Each team - operations, marketing, sound, lighting, general crew, and volunteers - is a line of defense that protects and enhances the overall experience; therefore, they hold our hidden world together. By grounding their work in strong core values that reinforce safety and awareness, the team comes together in service of the greater good and the future of our culture.
The collaboration between PIQUED FM, 6AM, and SYNTHETIK MINDS demonstrates the power of community. United by the same values, PIQUED FM views both event groups as inspirational forces that directly impact the community, bring international and local talent together, and champion live acts.
In a city where Hollywood’s performative norms often create disconnection between communities, 6AM and SYNTHETIK MINDS do the opposite: seek for true connection and genuine kindness. Both collectives have spent years refining the LA warehouse experience by making it safer and adding accountability. Their ability to protect the culture continues to honor techno traditions while paving the way into the future that amplifies what Los Angeles is really about: a city where great music and great people display our great artistic culture.
Consequently, the question still remains: “Why do you do what you do? The answer extends beyond philosophy, policies, community, or even the team itself. It is ultimately about the future - shaping the way for the next generation of techno to come while learning lessons from the past. For Wang and Sgalbazzini, their humility is their superpower. By believing in the proactive potential of both their community and their city, they lead by example without arrogance. Perhaps that is why they continue to do what they do: not for recognition, but because they feel compelled to contribute to something greater than themselves.
