Videos on TikTok containing electronic music garnered more views than indie for the first time last year, with a combined 13 billion views on posts with the tag #ElectronicMusic.
As reported by The Guardian, electronic music represents faster growth than indie, rap and hip hop on the social media platform — growing by 45% from 2023, which had also seen a 100% rise in the same period.
Techno and house are reportedly among the most popular sub-genres within the hashtag, with TikTok claiming that the popularity of acts such as Disclosure and Joel Corry is driving the genre's growth on the app.
Speaking to The Guardian, TikTok's head of partnerships for the UK and Ireland Toyin Mustapha said: “TikTok users tend to tag the genres of music, especially genres like electronic music.
"It shows the community they are trying to build and are part of, and electronic music is very much a community-led thing,” he continued.
In the UK, videos created with #ElectronicMusic grew by 50% in 2024, with views increasing by 22%.
“Dance music has become more accessible and big in the commercial sphere. We are seeing the breaking down of boundaries for artists, and TikTok is part of that,” Muustapha continued. “It’s not just reflected in festival bookings, you can see it in the official charts as well."
