Google has rolled out a new prompt-based music generative AI tool.
A partnership between GoogleLabs and Google's DeepMind Technologies, MusicFX DJ allows users to "shape music and sound in real-time using a wide range of prompts", according to project adviser, UK artist Jacob Collier.
Among these prompts are the standard instruments and genres, "but also emotions, abstract images, and even made up words," explained Collier on Instagram.
MusicFX DJ is an extension of Google's generative AI tool Music FX, launched earlier this year, which creates a 30-second track when you feed it a written prompt. Using the new DJ mode, the tool now lets you craft a full DJ set through typing a vast range of prompts, anything from 'vibrato theremin jam' to 'hip-house'.

Meanwhile, DeepMind have also announced updates to their music AI toolkit, Music AI Sandbox.
Last year, it was revealed that Google is working on software to turn brain scans into music while detecting samples less than one second long is now possible with Google Assistant.
Back in August, two AI-based music start-ups were accused by the three major record labels – Universal, Sony and Warner – as well as others of "trampling the rights of copyright owners" in their using of copyrighted music to train their models. Earlier this year, a British parliamentary group told the government that AI use in music should be the subject of future regulation.
