Beyond the Charts: Jovan's Quest for Authentic Sound
Jovan on his New Path, his New Label, and the wisdom in his music
Italian DJ and producer Jovan Vehn has been an active force in the techno scene since 2012, building a career defined by persistence, evolution, and authenticity. From early influences rooted in Detroit techno to the harder sounds that once dominated his sets, his musical identity has continued to evolve in step with his personal growth. A former resident of The Bunker in Fondi, Italy—where he shared the stage with artists like Trym, Axel Picodot, and Sebastian Groth—Jovan has earned widespread support from scene heavyweights such as Charlotte de Witte, Dax J, Hadone, and Rebekah. His chart success on Beatport, including multiple Top 10 releases, solidified his reputation as a respected producer within the global techno circuit. Now, after notable releases on respected labels like Luca Agnelli’s Etruria Beat, Jovan launches his own imprint Middle Way Records—a deeply personal project that embodies his evolving sound and philosophy of balance, groove, and emotional depth.
Jovan Vehn talks to 6AM about finding wisdom through music, shifting from hard techno intensity to deeper emotional resonance, and launching his label Middle Way Records as an honest reflection of his
Hi Jovan! Thanks for taking the time to talking to 6am. How are you?
Hi guys, everything is fine, I’m working to improve the situation. I’ve been very busy in the studio lately, but it’s nice to take a moment to talk with you.
For those that don’t know you’ve been active since around 2012 and your sound stretches from Detroit-inspired techno to much harder territory. How has your mindset or personal growth shaped that evolution? Was there a moment when you felt like your sound finally represented who you are?
At a certain point I realized that the hardest side no longer represented me. I moved towards a more groovy, melodic and relaxed sound, because I felt the need to regain the pleasure of producing and playing. I believe that personal growth inevitably influences the way you express yourself: when you change inside, the music also changes. For me, in addition to making those who listen to you feel good, it is essential to have fun and feel in tune with what you create
You’ve released on respected labels like Etruria Beat and now you’re launching your own imprint, Middle Way Records. What pushed you to take that step, and what kind of artists or sound do you want to build around it?
The release on Etruria Beat for me was a real turning point, like the dream of a child who wants to become a footballer and finally succeeds. It took me three years of work, challenges and total concentration, with only one goal: to be able to publish on that label. When it happened, it was like realizing a dream that I had inside for a long time.
Middle Way Records, on the other hand, represents something more intimate — it’s my creature. At first I thought of keeping it just for me, without including other artists, because I want every release to reflect my vision and that everything is connected by a common thread. I want to build a clear, recognizable, coherent sound identity.
Maybe in the future there will be remixes or collaborations, but always with artists who share the same approach and the same sensitivity. Middle Way for me is a path, not just a label.
Speaking of your label you’re releasing your own EP Wisdom In the Path. You state that it traces your inner journey “from fear and anxiety to purity, happiness, and enjoying every moment,” can you walk us through one or two moments or tracks that really capture that shift for you? Which tracks represent what emotional state?
Wisdom In The Path was born in a period when I needed to find balance and sincerity towards myself. Each track represents a passage of this inner journey, from the initial chaos to a sense of peace and acceptance.
"Burnout" and "Ikigai", for example, represent the darkest phase - a moment full of anxiety and confusion, with harsher sounds and constant tensions. It's like they're telling that inner struggle between what you want to be and what you're trying to let go of.
Then come songs like "Wisdom In The Path" and "Self Control", where the sound opens up, becomes more melodic, more breathy. There I really felt that I found the lightness and pleasure of making music without forcing myself. That feeling of freedom and presence in the moment is what for me “wisdom in the path” means: understanding that the path itself is the goal.
Each track is like a fragment of my state of mind, but together they form a unique story — the transformation from fear and control, to purity and pleasure in creating.
You’ve released tracks that have landed in both Hard Techno and Raw/Deep Techno charts. Where does Wisdom In the Path fall within that spectrum? Did you aim for something intense and driving like your earlier work, or does this project explore a different energy or mood altogether?
Wisdom In The Path is located in a different area than my previous work. In the past I was more attracted to hard, raw and direct sounds — I wanted to push the intensity and impact to the maximum. With this EP, however, I felt the need to explore a deeper and more controlled energy, where strength does not come from speed or aggression, but from groove and emotion
It’s a more mature, more conscious project. Each track reflects a balance between power and fluidity, between introspection and freedom. I no longer just wanted to make people dance, but also to make them feel something real.
I’m not interested in following rankings or genres, but creating something that people can really feel, inside. I want my music to arrive, to touch, to communicate.
Wisdom In The Path is the reflection of this maturity: a journey between intensity and calm, strength and lightness. It’s my way of saying that music must be lived, not just played or classified.
You’ve achieved a lot of chart success on Beatport, but when it comes to this new record, what does success mean to you now? How will you know if Wisdom In the Path truly connected?
Success for me today has a completely different meaning than in the past. I used to associate it with numbers, rankings, results on Beatport... now instead I see it as something much more human and authentic.
With Wisdom In The Path I don't try to get on the charts, but to make my music live in the most real way possible — playing it around the world, seeing people move, getting excited, connecting with what I feel too.
I will know that this record has really connected when I see that spark in the faces of those who listen to it, when I feel that the energy I put inside comes back, amplified. For me, that's the real success: turning a personal emotion into a shared moment.
Thanks so much for taking the time. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to share my path. It's always special to be able to talk about music, creativity and what's behind my projects.
I would just like to add that music for me is above all joy and discovery, I hope that those who listen to me can live each track with the same freedom and fun with which I created it.
