Belgian producer on the rise, Samm, has continued to capture the attention of those that matter with his stylish and unique approach to his artistry. Developing a distinctive style characterized by infectious beats, seamless transitions and melodic and deep workings, his original productions have already caught the eyes of epic names including musical don Solomun with what many tipped as their track-of-the-year, ‘Does It Matter’. Blending seamlessly together afro-house and indoctrinating melodic strains of dance music, he has also received support from names incuding Adriatique, CamelPhat, Keinemusik, Themba and many more. With the birth of Magnifik, his new record label and community in collaboration with his fellow music lover Ajna, Samm is surely on his way to become one of today’s most sought-after DJ/ producers.
Samm talks to 6AM about his journey in music, support from industry giants, the evolution of his style, the vision for his label Magnifik, and the creation of his latest track "Everybody Get Up."
Hi Samm! Thanks for taking the time to talk to 6AM. How are you doing?
I’m good! Thank you – Just got back from Portugal, took some time off to breath a bit and relax.
You've received support from industry giants like Solomun and CamelPhat for your recent release. How does it feel to have such influential names backing your music, and has their feedback influenced your future projects?
Receiving such great feedback from those guys, is like a stamp for yourself you’re doing something good. Although i feel good with the music i’m making but when you see a video of them playing your stuff it’s always a good feeling. Hope one day I can do the same for other artists.
Starting your musical journey at the age of 12 and transitioning to electronic dance music by 16, how has your approach to music evolved over the years? What key moments or experiences have shaped your artistic style?
Collaborations was definitely a game changer for me. I got signed to a publishing when I was 25. And they put me out of my comfort zone. From making dutch pop music to techno and everything in between really opened up my production career. This was just as a producer. When I started ‘Samm’ this helped me a lot due to all the knowledge of the past and other styles I made.
Magnifik, your record label, has been gaining traction since its inception. What vision do you have for Magnifik, and how do you plan to differentiate it from other labels in the industry?
I think what we try to do is bring out songs we really like to play. We don’t make it to complicated or don’t overthink it. If it’s good it’s good :-)
We try to invest in every song the same and let the people decide if it becomes a hit or not. We also think it’s not only a recordl abel but more like a community where people can get involved in.
Tell us about your newest track “Everybody Get up”. What experiences were you aiming to evoke in your listeners with this track?
This one started as a joke to be honest. We just found randomly vocals and threw them on the instrumental and it sounded so weird but also fun in a way. I was thriving to get more towards Innervisions kinda sounds and the result was there in 4 hours.
Most of the time the best records I made come in a short amount of time.
What were some major influences and inspirations for the creation of “Everybody Get Up”? What are the aspects of it that make it represent and fit Magnifik’s catalog?
More like a club feeling vibe. For example the stabs are really aggressive and the bpm is 119 so it’s very slow but still clubby enough. The slower you put a bpm the more space a track has. Like I said before I wanted something more ‘’industrial’’ than all my other melodic stuff.
Thanks again for taking the time. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I’ve been in the music industry for a long time and what’s happening now is where it all started for me. It’s 100 % about good music. And I hope it continues like this for a long time.
