Into the Dystopian Void: An Introduction to Megafang
Sculpting Cinematic Darkness and Subversive Identity Through Sound and Vision
Megafang is a Los Angeles-based duo whose sound spans across dark electronics, alt-dance, and doom music.
Previously in a Brooklyn hybrid metal band, their set draws from club-adjacent atmospheres + gothic futurism.
MF invites you into a dark and immersive world.
Hi Megafang! Thanks for talking to 6AM how are you both?
SF: HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR TO THE 6AM FAMILY!
You’ve left a lot of unknowns for this project while having an intentional curated aesthetic. If someone just discovered the name and had no context at all, what would you want them to understand about the identity behind it before they even press play? Is this mysterious persona an extension of both you, a shield, or something else entirely?
TG: HELLO WE ARE MEGAFANG. MY NAME IS THE GLOOM AND I’M A PRODUCER IN DTLA ARTS DISTRICT.
SF: I’M SHELLEY FANG, SINGER AND SONG WRITER. OUR SOUND IS INSPIRED BY DYSTOPIAN CINEMATIC WORLDS AND THE DARKER SIDE OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC.
A lot of artists talk about culture but few actually shape one around their project. When you think about the community you both want to attract, what kind of people are you all hoping to feel seen in this space? What does that shared language look like beyond just the tracks?
SF: WE USED TO PLAY DOOM METAL IN A NY UNDERGROUND BAND, AND OUR FANS FELT LIKE A CULT. THEY WERE DJS, PARTY HOSTS, MUSES, AND DREAMERS. THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT I THINK MAYBE FEELS STRANGE ON THE INSIDE, BUT THAT’S WHAT MAKES THEM GLAMOROUS.
The debut release of “Untrue” just landed on 6AM and it feels like the opening chapter of something bigger. When you both chose that as the first public statement, what were you trying to signal about where this project is headed over the next year? You’ve mentioned that this project is about a hybrid of doom and darkness, what does that mean for you and how has that been represented in “Untrue”?
TG: PERSONALLY I THINK OF DOOM AS A SORT OF DARK ROOM WHERE OUR REAL DESIRES LIVE. ‘UNTRUE’ IS ABOUT DEPROGRAMMING THE ILLUSIONS THAT KEEP YOU FROM ENTERING THAT ROOM.
There is an upcoming remix from a Chicago based techno DJ. Without giving too much away, what drew you to that collaboration? Was it about legacy, contrast, energy, or something more personal?
SF: WE’VE BEEN FRIENDS SINCE OUR NYC YEARS. HE ORGANIZED SOME OF THE HEAVIEST UNDERGROUND WAREHOUSE SHOWS THAT WE’VE PLAYED. HE’S ULTRA COMMITTED TO DARK TECHNO AND SUBVERSIVE CULTURE SO IT WAS NATURAL THAT WE SHOWED THIS PROJECT TO HIM FIRST.
Visuals play a huge role here, especially with the design work coming from Electra. How early in the process does the visual world get built? Do the images come after the music, or are they shaping the direction from day one?
SF: I TEND TO THINK OF MUSIC VISUALLY. FOR ‘UNTRUE’ I HAD THE IMAGE OF AN ENIGMATIC FIGURE IN A RUINED CITY.
ELECTRA IS A BERLIN ARTIST WHO MAKES HARD INDUSTRIAL TECHNO VISUALS UNDER THE NAME ENTHRALL (@enthrall__). WHEN I SAW HER WORK, I KNEW RIGHT AWAY SHE WAS THE PERFECT FIRST COLLABORATOR.
SHE TOOK MY VISION AND MADE IT INTO A SHORT FILM THAT IS HALF DYSTOPIAN FANTASY AND HALF SURREAL DREAM.
Thanks so much for talking to us. What else do you have in store for 2026?
SF: MANY MORE RELEASES, INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATORS, AND BRINGING THE WORLD OF MEGAFANG TO THE STAGE. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US.
