LUCRE Discusses the Darker Evolution of His Sound on ‘Obsidian’
The Sound Market founder talks raw techno, the power of creative independence, and why his latest three-track EP is his most intentional statement yet.
LUCRE returns with ‘Obsidian’, a three-track EP released via his own imprint Sound Market. Compact yet powerful, the project marks a clear evolution in his sound, pushing deeper into the darker edges of techno while maintaining a sharp emotional focus. ‘Obsidian’ feels less like a collection of tracks and more like a precise statement, capturing a pivotal moment in LUCRE’s ongoing artistic journey.
Hello, LUCRE! How are you?
Great, thank you for having me!
What was the first spark or moment that set this project into motion?
As I continue evolving within the raw techno landscape, I’m increasingly driven by the underground energy that defines the genre. This release represents the next step in my artistic progression, deeper, heavier, and more intentional within this sound.
The title ‘Obsidian’ suggests something dark, reflective, and sharp. How does that translate into the themes and production choices on the EP?
This is definitely one of my darker records. The title ‘Obsidian’ is something I’d been holding onto for a while, and it finally aligned with the vision for the EP and title track. Paired with my wife’s vocals, it brought a deep, dark, and seductive energy that completed the record’s aesthetic.
When you started creating ‘Obsidian’, did you have a clear vision from the beginning, or did the project find its identity along the way?
From the very beginning, the vision was clear: I wanted to create something intentionally deep and dark.
Walk us through your production process for the EP, did all the tracks start from rhythm, melody, sound design, or something else entirely?
I approach every track with the same foundational process: I begin by crafting the kick, then shape the bassline around it. From there, I decide whether to incorporate a rumble to complement the kick or move in a cleaner direction. Each track evolves uniquely, but the starting framework remains consistent.
Were there any new production approaches or sonic risks you took on this project that you hadn’t before?
In raw Techno, the emphasis is on groove, momentum, and the journey which is a different approach entirely from more peak-time techno. It’s more rhythmic and hypnotic, with minimal breakdowns and a consistent drive that keeps the energy high and the dance floor moving. In contrast, peak-time Techno leans into more dramatic breakdowns and harder, more explosive drops. Both styles require different approaches and nuances in the production process to truly make them work.
Does ‘Obsidian’ follow your signature sound? Or would you say you tried something new?
I’d say it’s becoming part of my signature. My sound has reached a point where, whether you’re listening to my raw techno or my peak-time work, there are clear through-lines that connect back to me and that’s exactly what I aim for. I believe a true Techno artist should be able to move fluidly between different sub-genres while maintaining a recognizable identity that listeners can immediately connect with.
Did you handle the production on your own, or did you collaborate with other producers on this project?
My wife on vocals for both ‘Obsidian’ and ‘Pressure Point’!
After creating ‘Obsidian’, where do you feel your sound is headed next?
Deeper, darker, and undeniably refined. As artists, we’re constantly evolving and true evolution always comes with growth and improvement.
Do you have any upcoming releases already planned? What can fans expect to hear next?
Absolutely. I’m very excited for what’s ahead. January marks the release of a new EP on a major, widely recognized label, and I couldn’t be more pumped for it!
‘Obsidian’ reinforces LUCRE’s commitment to independence and full artistic control, from its meticulously crafted sonic architecture to the visual world that frames the project.
