UMEK launches his new record label, 1605 GrooveSector, with a brutal two-track single titled Mechanically Intensive.
The release combines the mechanical elements of techno with tribal percussion that has flowing energy released by its fast-paced rhythms. It’s a release that fully embodies the hardgroove techno sound that is becoming prominent on dance floors across the globe.
Hardgroove is a reimagining of the classic techno sound from the ‘90s, and UMEK has a legacy stretching back to those times, as he has been releasing electronic music since 1996. He is an architect of the original hardgroove sound, and has revisited his classic style following its modern-day revival.
Polyvinyl is the alias that UMEK has been using for his hardgroove releases, similar to how he uses Zeta Reticula to release electro tracks.
He has already released Polyvinyl productions via record labels ranging from Christian Smith’s Tronic to Hertz’s Sway, and 1605 GrooveSector seems set to become a regular outlet for his hardgroove tracks.
“Mechanically Intensive” is a traditional hardgroove techno track with filters opening and closing over percussion to create peaks and troughs of energy. The core of the groove is flowing congas and gritty hi-hats that are augmented by jerking synth stabs, and a solid bassline adds some funk.
“Da Flute” brings up the rear with what many might consider to be the A-side, as it’s got all of the original’s in-your-face energy, but adds in a prominent melody hook that gives it a unique and memorable sound.
