Hi, Goldspek! How’s it going?
Hi, I am doing great, thank you. I am grateful to be alive on this magical planet in this lifetime.
To begin, your musical background includes classical orchestral training, but what initially drew you to Electronic Music? Was there an experience or a particular Artist that first introduced you to the genre?
When I was younger in my teenage and college years, my friend introduced me to the music of Tiësto, Kaskade, Armin Van Buuren and the like. I knew back then that I was drawn to female vocal Trance and would listen to those tracks in my car often.
Fast forward to when I moved to California in 2017 and happened to be re-introduced to electronic acts such as Kyle Watson, LSDream, GRiZ, Soffi Tucker and the like. I would say Lightning in a Bottle 2017 was a monumental event for me that really made me want to re-pursue music and increase my involvement in it in a more substantial way than just being a participant.
Can you remember your earliest memory involving music?
When I was around 6 or 7, my parents enrolled me in a German music curriculum called Orf while we still lived in Iran. This curriculum gave young kids a chance to explore different instruments including, percussion, piano and other instruments. I knew then that I have an affinity for music and have an intuitive ear for it. I recall my teacher also mentioning to my parents that I have a natural gift for it and that they should encourage me to pursue my music career further. I ended up continuing my music studies by having a private tutor for flute and also joined the West Vancouver Symphonic Youth Orchestra when my family and I immigrated to Vancouver, Canada years later.
Who were your musical idols when you were young?
I’m not sure I have a particular idol per se, but some early musical influences were Michael Jackson, Queen, Kaskade, Zero 7, John Mayer, Grateful Dead, Kings of Leon, and the list goes on.
When did you start making music?
I started making music in 2019 right around COVID and right around the passing of my beloved father.
How did you learn to produce music?
I came across the set of my current production teacher at an event in 2019. I reached out to him and expressed interest in his music and his compositions. Two weeks later, I saw that he was accepting production students and I took it as a sign to work with him. I have now been working with him for the past 5 years. I have also pursued vocal training with a professionally trained opera singer as well.
Which instruments or software did you start using at the beginning of your career?
I have been working pretty much exclusively with Ableton. Since I play classical flute, I have been incorporating it more into my productions recently. I also often play the MIDI keyboard piano within my productions rather than producing my melodies in the DAW. I plan to expand my instruments with more analogue synths in the near future.
Has this changed as you’ve evolved and grown as a Producer?
Music to me is a black box. There is always room for growth and evolution when it comes to production. I am most proud of my ability to synthesize, and sound design my own sounds, record and songwrite my own vocals, play in my melodic leads into the DAW, learn and deepen my knowledge in music theory and use it as the structure for writing and completing new tracks and becoming faster in the DAW in general. As I mentioned above, I plan to expand to potentially becoming a live act with playing piano, and the flute, and singing live.
Is there a story or meaning behind the formation of the name, Goldspek? How did Goldspek come to be?
When I was first launching my artist project, I was thinking of some titles that resonated with who I am as a person and my personality. I thought about grandeur names but quickly decided that I actually wanted to be the opposite of that. I do not want my music to be about me and my ego, I would rather be a channel for the music to flow through me. I just wanted to be a speck of gold floating in this massive universe, minding my own business and just creating my own music. My name also means “ little light” in my language of Farsi. I figured “Goldspek” and “Little Light” are somewhat similar and both resonate with me. And that’s how my artist name came about to be.
What has been your favourite release to date? What about it would you say epitomises your signature sound?
That’s a tough one to decide. I think ‘Dreaming While Awake’ and ‘Cosmic Paradise’ really resonate with who I am as an artist and sonically represent the sound landscape that I am trying to get across to my listeners. However, I really like the lyrics that I brought into ‘Eternal Love’ and ‘Temple of Love’, so I would say as a songwriter and vocalist, those tracks are also pretty representative of who I am as an artist and my signature sound. I am constantly evolving though as a human and artist, and so is my sound, so I would say the best is still yet to come.
What are some of the goals and milestones you are hoping to achieve with Goldspek over the next five years?
I am choosing to pursue music freely without putting any timelines, goals or pressure on myself as an artist. I am just staying open and allowing the universe to bring its magic to me. I trust that my music will lead the way to my path within the music industry.
