Hotel and music venue Ibiza Rocks has paused its programming in the wake of two British men's deaths this month.
The San Antonio venue announced the cancellations on Instagram yesterday, Monday, 21st July, following 19-year-old Gary Kelly's tragic fall that same day. Kelly was a professional ice hockey player for the Dundee Stars. Another Scotsman, 26-year-old Evan Thomson, died after a fall on 7th July, the Guardian reports.
"We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred", Ibiza Rocks' statement reads. "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations... Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time."
According to Ibiza Rocks' schedule, the July events calendar has no events listed 21st through 25th July, with events looking to resume on the 26th with a LoveJuice party. The venue has not confirmed if events from the 26th will eventually be cancelled, and there is no notice of the programming pause or recent deaths on its website. Dizzee Rascal was set to perform this week, BBC reports, with Rudimental booked for 30th July.
Aberdeen's Press & Journal spoke to friends of Evan Thomson, who criticised the hotel's response and paramedic's timing. “When we discovered him, security took us away to [the] front desk outside of reception... The paramedics didn’t really come for around 30 minutes", they said. "The staff on reception were giving us a false sense of hope... I was so angry at the way we were getting treated... We were kept away from the guests at reception during this time."
One friend, Blair Roberston was troubled by Ibiza Rocks' quickness with moving on from Thomson's fall. "We heard the jet washes from the ground cleaning the area where Evan died and it had only been 90 minutes or so since he was found", he said to Press & Journal. "That was the worst thing for us to hear — how fast they tried to get things back to normal." No events were cancelled after Thomson's early July death.
These are not the only deaths to take place on Ibiza Rocks property this summer season. In April, two visitors passed away on the premises: a 19-year-old Italian tourist, who also fell from the balcony, on 27th April; and a 30-year-old British woman was found dead in her hotel room, with evidence pointing to a heart condition as the cause, on the 30th (via Mixmag).
