Jeff Mills is set to host a special residency, titled Star Chronicle, at Spot Lite, a gallery and event space in the Detroit. The residency will run across four days, from Wednesday 10th September, through to Saturday 13th September.
Star Chronicle will feature a series of cultural artefacts and memorabilia from his personal collection, including several films that have never been screened in the US before.
Among the films being screened are X-102 Rediscovers The Rings of Saturn Live in Tokyo 2018, which includes excerpts from a rare live performance of Underground Resistance (Mike Banks and Jeff Mills) under their alias, X-102. This will be screened on Thursday 11th September.
The second of the three films is PLANETS by Dairakudakan, which will be screened on Friday 12th September. PLANETS is a concept film Mills created that explores the planets of the solar system and interprets them into motion and dance choreographed by Dairakudakan dancers, under the supervision of Akaji Maro.
The final film is Life To Death And Back, a film shot by Mills at the Louvre Museum in Paris for his residency there in 2015. This will be screened on Saturday 13th September.
The evening portion of the events will see Mills host special guests from the ‘Escape Velocity’ projects, including Terrence Dixon, Developer, Optic Nerve, and multimedia journalist and radio host, Liz Werner.
Each edition of the residency will be tied to the theme of space travel, particularly, as Mills puts it, in the metaphysical sense. “It’s the process of mentally releasing one’s ‘self’ in order to be able to reach a higher level of consciousness and explore the unknown space of the mind,” he said.
“The objective of Star Chronicle is to propose new ways of thinking about where we’re going. Collectively, as a community of deep-thinking animals. What we’re spiralling towards and the purpose of staying awake. What it means to be conscious and alive.”
In May, several billboards appeared around Detroit emblazoned with the words “This Is Techno”, thanks to Jeff Mills’ Axis Records.
In June, Jeff Mills announced the re-release of ‘Live At Liquid Room - Tokyo’ to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the show.
