Techno DJs in Berlin could soon start performing at the city’s U-Bahn train stations in a new scheme set up by public transport company BVG, per Tagesspiegel.
According to the German news publication, BVG aims to bring “the lively and vibrant Berlin into the station” with the new initiative, though it’s currently unclear when it would be introduced.
Kottbusser Tor, a train station in central Kreuzberg, would be the first to see the scheme come into play, with “techno and electronic DJs” performing on the platform of the U8 line.
BVG also said that the station’s U1 and U3 lines could introduce jazz artists, all of which would ideally be from Berlin’s “vibrant” music scene or have a connection with the area around Kottbusser Tor.
It comes as part of a scheme to revive the station area, which has reportedly gained a reputation for having a high level of crime, litter, and violence.
BVG CEO Henrik Falk said that introducing live music at the station could contribute to the “wellbeing of passengers”, Tagesspiegel reports.
The wider initiative – which introduced a cleaning patrol to increase cleanliness and heighten security for passengers at key stations – was tested through February 2024 to March 2025.
According to Falk, the scheme will now move into operation after passing its initial test phase. No further details have been announced around who would perform at BVG stations as of yet – it’s said the plan is still under review.
Art exhibitions along the U8 line could also be introduced, Tagesspiegel reports, which would feature work from local artists, as well as light installations.
