However, it's the unwavering passion of the attendees for the music that truly sets Movement apart, making it a rare and unforgettable experience.

As the birthplace of techno, Detroit's stages demand nothing less than absolute dedication and excellence. Crafting this year's top pick from the Movement lineup presented notable challenges for me, yet amidst the diverse array of performers, a select few stand out as my most anticipated acts.

Richie Hawtin

British-born and Canadian-raised, Richie Hawtin is regarded as one of the few living legends in the techno community. Renowned for his groundbreaking parties in Detroit during the 90s, where entire rooms were draped in black plastic, he earned the moniker Plastic Man. Throughout his career, Hawtin has continuously pushed the boundaries of sound and played a pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent. Influenced by the futuristic sounds of Detroit techno, the acid house scene in Chicago, and the spectral frequencies of sci-fi films, he embarked on his musical journey. Whenever he takes the stage at Hart Plaza, the atmosphere crackles with electric energy, a testament to his enduring influence and impact.

Indira Paganotto

Hailing from Gran Canaria, Paganotto is a highly respected figure in the house and techno scene. Renowned for her dynamic performances and infectious smile, she continuously pushes the boundaries of electronic music with her innovative approach, inspiring a new generation of artists. Often combining very diverse sounds, Indira impeccably manages to capture the audience’s attention. Her trademark, psy-trance mixed with techno, has nowadays become a synonym for her. As she prepares to make her Movement debut, anticipation surges for the performance of this Spanish Psytechno superstar, marking it as one of the most eagerly awaited shows of the festival.

 

Colin Benders 

The solitary yet commanding presence behind a sprawling 243-module rack, Colin Benders is a genre-defying sound explorer and modular mad scientist. His music defies easy categorization, challenging conventional electronic norms and pushing the boundaries of creativity. Unfettered by the constraints of mainstream production, Benders charts his own artistic course, crafting innovative compositions that defy gravity itself. In his live performances, Benders weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of sound, characterized by its unpredictable nature and exhilarating flights of sonic exploration. Each show is a journey into uncharted territory, marked by climactic peaks, untamed deviations, and daring forays into chaotic soundscapes. The Italian duo has completely transformed the underground scene with their commanding presence, showcasing the boundless versatility of techno through entirely improvised performances, elevating the scene to new heights.

Their sets are defined by intricate acid basslines and potent kicks, captivating audiences with their legendary live acts known for their intensity and deep connection with the crowd on a visceral level.

 

Speedy J

From tape decks and turntables in the 80s to hybrid sets, Jochem Paap better known as Speedy J continues to push the boundaries of Techno exploration. Renowned for his innovative approach to sound, he continuously experiments with various textures and styles, resulting in a diverse catalog of intellectually stimulating records. Blurring the lines between live performance and digital DJing, Speedy J merges subversive electronics with peak-time techno, resulting in live sets that are truly mind-bending experiences.

 

Ellen Allien

“Music gives us the possibility to relax the brain, to follow something,” Ellen says. “If you move your body—if you have sex, if you kiss, if you dance, if you’re in the shower and the water goes through your body—all these movements open channels and [allow us to] connect. That’s why we go to clubs. Just to feel this moment, without pretending to be someone else.”

The Berlin-born DJ embodies every word she says in that quote! I had the pleasure of catching her sets at Berghain and Movement last year. Her performances are truly an experience. A must-watch!

 

British murder boys 

Regis and Surgeon, aka British Murder Boys, are equally notorious for their explosive live/DJ performances as for their productions. The duo's powerful brand of industrial techno – rhythmically complex, emboldened by visceral noise and a dub sensibility derived from the Basic Channel school – crushes all who came before it.

Sam Shepherd, also known as Floating Points, transcends sonic boundaries and stands as one of the most respected figures in contemporary music. Paranoid London 

The British duo channels the gritty essence of early Chicago house, capturing the wild squeals, pulsating 303s, and deadpan vocals with visceral force. Their approach to music is marked by broad tastes and an ethos centered on personality and authenticity, eschewing formulaic dance music for something more vibrant and dynamic. They've crafted one of the most thrilling live acts in electronic music, further enhanced by a new show developed during lockdown. This revamped performance features Warmduscher vocalist Mutado Pintado, queer advocate Josh Caffe, and visuals by Bob Jaroc, demonstrating their commitment to pushing boundaries and leaving a lasting impact.

 

Jaguar 

The BBC Radio broadcaster, DJ, and journalist is Breaking Gender and Racial Boundaries in Dance Music through the Jaguar Foundation in efforts to make electronic music a more equal place for the next generation of creatives & emerging artists. Jaguar's sets often include specially-produced edits of tracks by her friends, reflecting her spirit of togetherness and authenticity in promoting dance music.

 

DJ Godfather

Detroit’s own Brian Jeffries, known as DJ Godfather, stands as a true pioneer of Ghetto Tech, shaping a culture that blends techno, house, electro, and booty records into one electrifying vibe. With over 25 years of experience, Godfather commands the decks with unparalleled skill, dropping 60-to-70 records in a single hour DJ set. His performances are infused with flair, beat juggling, and the unmistakable Detroit hustle. Renowned for consistently drawing the largest daytime crowds year after year at Detroit’s Movement Festival, he brings together juke and jit dancers in a celebration of music.
