Pioneer DJ has announced a new limited-edition fanzine to celebrate the 30th birthday of the iconic CDJ.
The zine, called deckades, has a run of 1,000 print copies that are being shared on a first come, first serve basis, and charts the history and impact of the CDJ, from its origins as the CDJ-500 through USB, MP3s, touchscreen and more. It also includes interviews with Fatboy Slim, Fabio, Anna Tur, Kikelomo and TSHA, and outlines the specs and details of all 23 CDJ models from the original in 1994 to the current flagship model, the CDJ-3000.
Although the latest model was the first to remove the optical CD drive, but keep the CDJ name, the brand was a key product in the transition from vinyl to CD, which was more than just a format change. By pivoting from analogue audio to digital, it opened up a whole new world of features, like cue and loop points, playlists, and the controversial sync button.
DJs and fans who want to get their hands on the print version of deckades will need to be quick with them being distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can fill out the form to apply for a copy here. Alternatively, you can download the digital version here.
Pioneer DJ’s parent company AlphaTheta attempted to acquire the DJ software Serato last year, but the deal was recently threatened due to a decision by the New Zealand Commerce Commission.
