A "Souliloquy" with Soul Goodman
The Detroit artist talks about his new release, his independent label, and growing the local music scene.
A Detroit native, Soul Goodman crafted his musical taste and style by combining his piano and violin playing youth with his adult love of underground house and techno music. His style shows influences from his hometown along with others from across Europe and the Middle East. In just a few short years, Soul has grown and expanded his musical footprint enough to be invited to play festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Movement Music Festival, Untold Festival, and Charivari Detroit Music Festival. His latest releases have charted in the top 15 in their respective genres on Beatport with his most successful release “Deep Dark Blue” reaching #1. His goal is to always bring a Detroit party no matter where he goes...
Hi Soul Goodman! Good to talk to you again. How’s everything going with you?
Hello! Great to reconnect with you guys at 6AM also. Things are going well, as I have been feeling like I am getting reconnected properly with my music production and DJing. I kind of took some time to recalibrate and I am ready to go again. I’m very excited for this new release!
You’ve got your track “Souliloquy” coming out soon on your own imprint On My Terms. The title itself is pretty striking and obviously has a reference to your artist name. Can you tell us what made you choose that name and how this release feels different from your past work?
Yea, so much of my stuff always has some extra meaning behind what you initially see. With music being pretty personal, there is always more than just the name to explain the track idea. With this one, there is a vocal where the person is sort of having an internal conflict and short monologue, which is what a soliloquy is generally defined as. Adding the letter “U” in there to make it Souliloquy kind of makes it more of my own.
This release kind of harkens back to when I released Deep Dark Blue with the darker and deeper sort of vibe where there are more melodies etc. I would say that this is my newest music in that style that I also like to write. I can see this being played in a lot of situations with the type of artists that play this style.
In our last chat, you spoke about starting On My Terms so you could release music your way. With “Souliloquy” being the next step, how do you feel your label’s identity is starting to take shape since that launch?
I think this next track adds to the label in its own way. It is the first digital only single release on the label. I think this release will show the type of range that I will be releasing as I don’t want the label to be strictly any specific style or genre. This track is markedly different from what I put out with Exhibit A. The artists that I could see playing this are definitely different from who I think the first release appealed to. I want my label to continue to show different sides of Detroit music and hopefully I accomplished that with this one.
In the past, your releases have charted high on Beatport, with “Deep Dark Blue” even reaching number one. Now that you’ve seen that kind of recognition, how do you keep pushing yourself creatively without just trying to repeat the same formula? How do you feel that “Souliloquy” will continue that momentum?
Well, firstly, the biggest difference here is that this track won’t be available on Beatport. The label so far has released music on the ‘On My Terms’ Bandcamp page and other platforms and this will be the same. While getting into the Beatport charts is cool, I now prefer to put my music more where I have more control and also focus on all the other digital channels and streaming to really get the music out there. I have gotten great feedback from anyone who has heard the track, so I am really excited to finally put it out there for everyone to see the response. I think/hope that this track has the Deep Dark Blue vibe and potential to do even more.
You’ve been running your Garden of Soul day parties in Detroit all summer, and the last two dates are coming up this fall. What made you want to create that series, and what kind of atmosphere do you aim to build with those rooftop gatherings?
I wanted to try to fill a void here in the Detroit music scene as we really don’t have a big day party culture as many would probably think. When I was approached about the venue, I initially wasn’t sure what would be my angle on it until I saw how beautiful the rooftop was. Rooftop day parties are also very dependent on weather and a bunch of other external factors, so it has been both fun and challenging to do these parties. I wanted to create a spot on Saturdays where it could either be the only thing you do that day or could be the first stop towards a night out. I wanted more of a loungy and fun vibe and I think we accomplished that this summer. Everyone that has come through has really enjoyed the events.
You’ve already played some incredible stages from Movement in Detroit to Ultra and Untold, and now you’ve got a big hometown date opening for Dombresky on the horizon. Looking at both what you’ve done and what’s ahead, how do you feel your live shows are evolving, and what moments have stood out to you the most so far?
Longevity in the music/dj industry is not easy. So many artists come and go and there are more and more people getting into it every day. I am now about 12 years into the game and I remain very thankful and fortunate any time that I get asked to play or help throw an event. I have definitely had some unforgettable moments like you mentioned including playing the main stage at Movement in Detroit and playing Ultra and Untold multiple times.
Playing alongside bigger artists such as Dombresky allows me to be myself in front of crowds of people that may not already know me or see me often. I’ve been fortunate to play on some big shows in Detroit opening up for artists like Solomun, Black Coffee, Maceo Plex, Meduza, Sama’ Abdulhadi, and Booka Shade to name a few. Anytime I get to play with the crowd that one of these artists brings is always very special.
Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Not really, I just hope you and your listeners love the new music! Thank you again for having me!
