Hi madwoman! Thanks so much for talking to 6AM how are you doing?
Hey there, thanks for having me! Doing great.
First off, can you explain a little bit about your artist name and why you decided to go with ‘madwoman’? Is there any significance to you in general? Is there any significance that it’s not spelled with a capital ‘M’?
Sure, actually the name came to me a bit more than 10 years ago. I was already DJing and was searching for a suitable artist name and it came to me while watching the TV show “Mad Men”. Usually I draw a lot of inspiration from movies and video games, and so I tweaked it to fit me and I ended up liking the name madwoman. It's easy to remember and most people smile when I tell them my artist name which I really like!
All lower case is purely out of aesthetics.
You're about to embark on a major tour hitting new continents. What excites you the most about performing in places you've never been before? Any specific destinations you're particularly thrilled about?
Yes, I am very excited to share my music in a lot of new places this year. Next to playing, the travel part is actually one of my favorite parts about being a touring DJ, even though it's tough physically. It's always worth it as I really enjoy meeting different cultures and people with the same shared passion for music all over the globe. I am usually curious about the crowd, what are they into, what performance I can surprise them with and I am also really into seeing the different venues and of course the sound system. Usually I find a lot more similarities rather than differences in our techno culture and people are usually really sweet. I am extra thrilled about playing in Asia, as I am very intrigued by Asian anime, lifestyle, nature and video games overall, so I hope to be able to stay a little longer and explore the countries and get inspired, as I love to share my experiences as a story in my productions.
We’ve heard you've been busy in the studio lately. Can you tell us about the new elements you're experimenting with in your music? How do you think these changes will shape your sound for your upcoming releases?
I am currently reinventing my sound and going a bit back to my basics with a more minimalistic yet effective approach. Less is sometimes more and I am aiming for timeless with my own personal touch. At this point I would say I am producing guided by a long experience and exposure to techno music mixed with my own taste of what I feel is missing in the scene.
Speaking of your music you had a new track coming out on Aug 2nd on KHAZAD. What can you tell us about this track? What were some inspirations and what do you hope listeners will feel when listening to this track?
I had so much fun producing this track, but it's actually created during the pandemic. The lockdown was indeed a tough time for us all, but personally it was also a big production time for me. You can hear a bit of apocalyptic and industrial feeling to it, fitted for that time particularly. I imagined it being played in a big warehouse once the pandemic finally would be over. I guess I would like the listeners to have this in mind when they hear it. I have been holding on to the track ever since to see which label it would fit on, and now I am feeling very happy about it ending up on the UK based groovy industrial label KHAZAD. I believe it’s going to be a fine home for it.
You've played at some incredible venues around the world. Which performance has been the most unforgettable for you so far, and what made it special? What are you most looking forward to in your upcoming shows?
I had the honor of closing Kraftwerk in Berlin on Tresor’s 31 anniversary, this venue is legendary. The space is a former heating plant in east Berlin that was stopped in use in 1997, and then turned into the home of Tresor and OHM. This will forever be a very special memory for me.
Regarding upcoming shows, I am always excited about playing in new venues, but also glad to return to old ones as well. I love to see how our scene is growing year by year, and it’s really great to reunite with the dancers and promoters that turned into friends.
This year I also joined BPitch booking which is the roster of Ellen Allien, and the two of us have two shows scheduled together in Rome and Milan in fall that I am especially excited about.
Thanks again for your time, is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks a lot for having me, and hope to have the pleasure to visit soon!
