Luca Morris is an accomplished Italian techno artist known for his music on record labels such as Terminal M, Codex and Autektone Records. His fusion of explosive percussion and exhilarating synth lines give his tracks a sound that oozes dance floor appeal, as well as being a skilled DJ who’s known for his sets at places like Berghain in Berlin. His latest offering comes via Clif Jack's record label, MJA the Vision, and it’s a two-track release titled “Ghiaccio.” Excited to learn more about this new release and his other projects, we invited Luca Morris for this interview…
Hi Luca, can you start by giving our readers a bit of background about you and your music style?
Well, my music style is all about techno, but I also like to sprinkle in different electronic vibes. I’ve been doing this awesome work for quite a few years now, and I think all that experience shines through in my DJ sets and productions. It’s been quite the journey, and I’m excited to keep the beats going!
Can you remember the moment you fell in love with techno, and who are some of your main influences?
The moment I fell in love with techno was during my nights out dancing. Growing up with ‘80s synth pop like Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and New Order laid the groundwork for my musical taste. But it was the captivating beats and futuristic sounds of techno that truly grabbed my attention and ignited my passion.
You have released on iconic record labels such as Monika Kruse’s Terminal M, and I’m curious to know which release in your back catalogue you are most proud of?
I’m deeply grateful to Monika Kruse for giving me the opportunity to release multiple times on her label, Terminal M. Regarding my extensive discography dating back to 2000, I feel like a father who loves all his children equally, even the more mischievous or less polished ones. Each release is a piece of me and my artistic journey, and choosing a favourite would be like favouring one child over the other.
What’s in your music studio, can you list some of the equipment that’s essential to your sound?
In my music studio, there isn’t a particular piece of equipment that I always use or feel particularly attached to. I love experimenting and constantly testing out new “toys” to continuously renew and evolve my sound. It’s this sense of exploration and discovery that keeps my creative process fresh and exciting.
Your new EP on Clif Jack’s record label MJA the Vision is a great set of tracks, what was the idea and inspiration behind those two tracks?
Thank you for your kind words about my new EP on Clif Jack’s record label, MJA the Vision. The inspiration behind those two tracks actually stemmed from attending one of Jack’s parties. The atmosphere, the music, and the lights, all provided me with the perfect inspiration and energy to create those tracks. It was a sensory experience that deeply influenced the direction of the music, capturing the essence of that unforgettable night.
How did you first make contact with Clif Jack, and what made you decide to sign your tracks to MJA the Vision?
Clif Jack and I have known each other professionally for many years, as we both work extensively in Northern Italy. Even before meeting him in person, I held him in high regard. However, it was only after sharing an excellent lunch and a few drinks together (laughs) that we decided to collaborate. It was during that relaxed and convivial moment that the decision to sign my tracks to MJA the Vision felt like the natural next step in our relationship.
You have played DJ gigs all over the world including clubs like Berghain in Berlin, and it would be great to know your favourite event to perform at?
I’ve been fortunate to play at incredible venues around the world, including iconic clubs like Berghain in Berlin. However, my ultimate dream is to continue travelling the world and performing in diverse locations, immersing myself in different cultures and musical scenes. Each new experience brings a fresh perspective and energy to my performances, and I’m eager to explore even more of what the world has to offer.
What gigs and other releases do you have coming over the next few months?
2024 is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting year for me on the music front. I have several significant collaborations in the pipeline and numerous releases on the horizon. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal all the details just yet as they are top secret, but rest assured, there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months! Keep your ears peeled for some exciting announcements.
Thanks for running through our questions, is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
