Naz talks to SIX AM about her new endeavor with the launch of her new label "New Eden"
Hi NAZ! Thanks for talking to SIX AM. How are you doing?
Hey guys! Thanks so much for having me, big fan :) I’m doing great thank you for asking… a bit tired, a little hungry, but nothing a good 4-5 working days of sleep won’t fix
So you’re about to launch your own label “New Eden” with a focus on "really good f*cking music, regardless of genre”. Why are you taking this approach with a label of no focus on genre?
So, I personally have such a wide and varied musical taste and when it comes to electronic music, whether it’s in DJ sets or in the music I make… I don’t like to pigeon-hole myself into a genre if that makes sense? There are so many elements that make a great set or track and so many shared elements across the different electronic genres that you can really blend different styles and genres and make it work. What I want with New Eden is to be recognised as an electronic music label rather than say a ‘progressive’ or ‘melodic techno’ label. This gives myself, and other artists the freedom to make what we want… and let the music and the story speak for itself.
“New Eden” is described as a multi-sensory label. Can you break down for us how you plan on achieving this?
Yeah for sure! So in a nutshell… New Eden is where Storytelling meets Music meets Animation. I’ve created these worlds with my VFX Designer, Jimmy, in Unreal Engine (the worlds of New Eden) where everything is based. With every track release, a chapter of the New Eden storyline is published, and a fully animated music video is created and uploaded. So for example, the first release ‘Into The Night’ which came out last friday, we published Chapter One of the story on the website, and uploaded the full music video on Youtube on the day of the track release. We will also bring the visual aspect to live events… this is the part I’m really excited about!
You’re launching the label with the track “Into The Night”, since you are creating without regard for genres, in your own words describe this track and what listeners can expect to feel as they hear it on the dance floor.
Into The Night is about adventure, euphoria, taking a risk and ‘falling into the night’ and seeing where it takes you. The breakdown builds upon the dark and mysterious atmosphere and then a surprise acid lead pops out at you at the main drop to really drive it home. And maybe blow a few wigs off in the process.
How has your experience as an international touring DJ shaped your musical evolution and approach to live performances, and can you share any standout moments from your performances around the world?
It’s been an amazing experience, I have been really blessed and lucky to have played some epic shows and venues so early in my career. What’s been really cool is learning how each region has different styles and taste. The UK music scene is so different to the US as an example… the audience and what they vibe with differs. Maybe some tracks that I know would go off in the UK would be met with silent awkward stares here haha. But it’s all part of the learning process… plus I think it’s part of our roles as curators to introduce new stuff to new audiences and not always go for the bangers that you know will work. Take risks. Standout performances for me would be when I was on direct support for Tale Of Us earlier this year at Echostage in DC. That show was just insane for so many reasons… the audience and vibe of the crowd was unmatched, and on a personal level, being booked to support Tale Of Us, who have been such a big influence and inspiration for me over the years, was unreal. I definitely cried haha.
What has been the most memorable or defining moment in your international touring career so far, and how has it impacted your artistic journey and musical style?
Last year at Creamfields stands out as a defining moment that sparked a lot of inspiration and learnings and change. It was my first ever festival booking, my first time even going to Creamfields so that on its own was really cool. It was awesome getting to run around afterwards and see these artists I have looked up to for years play their sets and just do their thing. There was a moment during Artbat’s set where I was standing at the back of the crowd with my friends and I got the chills and cried (I promise I don’t actually cry much haha) because it was just so surreal. Like, how on earth did I go from being a 30 year old divorcee just two years prior… to then changing my entire life, changing my career, moving overseas and leaving everything behind.. and now I’m here? I’ll never forget that moment.
Thanks so much for talking to us and our audience. Is there anything else you’d like to add before we sign off?
I really appreciate you guys taking the time to chat with me! I have so much more music set to come out over the following months and well into 2024. I’m just really excited to get my music out there and keep building the story of New Eden and continue creating this world and hopefully bringing more and more people along on the journey :) xoxo
