Hi tesh! Thanks for talking to 6AM how are you?
Good! Summers kicking in - so its been fun to get outside (when I’m not keeping myself glued to my computer screen lol)
To get things started, what’s the significance behind your artist name? And how does it represent your music and you overall?
I'm so excited to answer this one! So I struggle coming up with artist names..I had a project back in the day called “Saen.” I thought that was so unique. This time around I didn't want to dwell too much on it so I ended up just using my real name “Seth” and moving the letters around. I tested it around my friends and it seemed to stick. For me that was the goal - something simple that felt truly like me.
Your debut EP’ CYCLES & REPETITIONS’ has already gotten love from Billboard, Spotify, SoundCloud, and Amazon. All big placements, but also platforms with very different audiences. How do you think your music is landing across those spaces? Are you surprised by who’s connecting with it most, especially with a debut album?
It's been great to see the continued support on the tracks out so far. What's the most interesting is realizing that everyone has their own taste - and although that may be obvious for its always reminding myself that each song will connect with the people it's supposed to connect to - and not every song is for everyone. But I will say, it's been so great to receive the feedback from new fans, my friends, and even artists I’ve always respected that have come around recently.
Looking at CYCLES + REPETITIONS as a complete body of work—narratively, sonically, and emotionally—do you see it more as a personal diary, a social mirror, or a work of fiction?
It's a mix of it all to an extent but it's really a personal diary. Each song does actually have specific meaning to it - some talk about my personal struggles with relationships, partying/nightlife, fears/doubts etc. But it's also a social mirror - as an artist I know that although the meaning of a song may be super apparent to me, each listener will interpret it differently. With some help from my homies Port London, we tried to at least create a sonic setting in each song that feels relevant and familiar. I will say so far, people have been actually picking up the inherent meaning in each song, so mad respect to those folks.
You’ve woven together UK garage, industrial techno, and even trance into a tight seven-track arc. How do you approach genre without letting it confine the emotional intent of a track? Do you think this blend is something listeners are seeking more now, or is it just where your head naturally goes?
I think the first step is to not think about what genre you intend to do but rather just create. I find getting caught up in the genre game is self destructive - because why would I stress about something that hasn't even been made yet? I think letting the story and song show and tell you where to go is the best approach. So naturally, I tend to enjoy a blend or what I call more “open format”. Grouping the songs all together on my first project is a way to signal to folks that moving forward, expect anything and everything. I do think folks are ready for more open format artists. I’ve been saying recently that it feels we’re due for an art renaissance - more folks being “artists” rather than “EDM artist” or “Pop artist” ya know?
For future releases can we expect more of this type of thematic story telling with music? Or will there be a variety with your future releases?
Definitely a mix, for my own mental sake not everything needs to be conceptual or thematic haha. There's a side to just enjoying a good vibe that's important as well. Sometimes, you just want a good song to dance to or stream, and the key is to not overthink. Moving forward, all my “projects” will be conceptual - like EP’s and albums. But everything in between I want to emphasize the “having fun” aspect of making music. Sometimes it's really not that deep, and that's okay.
Thanks so much for taking the time, is there anything else you would like to add before we sign off?
Thank you for having me! Excited for everyone to hear the full project. Shoutout to bitbird for being so supportive of this project as well.
