Tony Romera first stepped onto the scene 10 years ago as a fresh-faced 20-year-old looking to make waves and disrupt the electronic music world with his unique style and French-house inspired beats.
Since then, he's been busy releasing music and experimenting with different sounds and styles, putting out music on a range of powerhouse labels and gaining support from the likes of Diplo, Fisher, Chris Lake, Mark Knight, DJ Snake, Skrillex, Tiesto, Porter Robinson, Fatboy Slim, Deadmau5, Kaskade, Vintage Culture, Claptone, Adam Beyer, and many more.
His remix of Julio Navas, Gustavo Bravetti, and David Amo's "Raw" was one of Toolroom's biggest tracks of 2022, picking up support from Fisher, LP Giobbi, Gordo, and Carl Cox, to name just a few. In the last few years, Tony has become an integral part of the Toolroom family, and now he talks to SIX AM as he returns to the label with his latest single "House Y'all."
Hi Tony! Thanks for talking to SIXAM. How are you?
Hey SIXAM I'm great thanks, hope you too !!
Over the course of your decade-long career, how do you feel you've evolved as a musician, and what can we expect from you in terms of innovation and growth in your music based on your recent release “House Y’all”?
During these 15 years, I've worked a lot in the studio, spending the main part of my time there, experimenting, and trying new stuff, and new genres. It's always super interesting to try new things, you always learn a lot of things doing this. I produced thousands of pieces of music, some were good, some were not.. haha. But for a few years I'm focusing on producing Tech House, and House stuff. I feel like it's the genre I'm most comfortable in, I've played and produced house and tech house since my beginnings so it's kind of my first love. I'm trying to innovate and to add my touch into it, I hope you'll like it !
What inspires you to create your latest single “House Ya’ll”, and how does it differ from your previous releases in terms of style and sound?
I was listening to some old albums, and I wanted to have this kind of oldschool hip hop / breakbeat vibe into it. When I got the vocal, I've replayed something similar with a TB 303, and added some cool tech house drums, and here we are ! I've been playing this one in my sets for a while, and it works everytime !!
You've gained support from numerous renowned artists in the electronic music scene. How do these endorsements influence your approach to creating music, especially in your newest release?
It's amazing to have gained all these supports from artists I respect since many many years. But to be honest, it doesn't influence my approach when I'm creating, I'm just trying to make my own stuff, having fun working on it and then playing then. If I feel it, and if the crowd feels it, I release it.
Can you describe the specific elements in your latest track that contribute to its underground vibe and atmosphere?
I think that the minimal tech house drums are doing a good job to give it this underground vibe. But of course the main element is the vocal, and this short reverb on it probably helps too !
Is there anything else you would like to add before we sign off?
Yeah, thank you for having me !! And I have a ton of music coming these next few months, hope you'll love these !
