Boom Merchant’s new techno EP, Mexico on MPC, is out now on the Irish producer’s record label, Tribal Pulse. The first two tracks are peak time techno, and the third is a breakbeat track that shows a more experimental side to Boom Merchant’s sound.
Mexico on MPC is a title that links to Boom Merchant recently relocating to Mexico. Previously, he had been living in Glasgow (Scotland), and had been a big part of the Scottish city’s underground scene. His move to Mexico helps bring his music to new audiences, and this release celebrates the diversity of his style.
The opening track, “Acapulco,” combines robust percussion with twinkling synths and exhilarating vocal bursts to create an uplifting energy with dark undertones. Track two, “Dadle,” is a hypnotic track with a jazz sample separating the breakdown from the ominous intensity of the main groove. “Fivejag” closes the release with a thickset bassline and trippy percussion sequenced into breakbeat rhythms.
The three track release shows Boom Merchant to be an innovative producer who can work in a variation of styles. “Dadle” is a great example of this, as the jazz flute sample used in the breakdown is a stark contrast with the rest of the track, but its smooth transition ensures a continuity of sound.
