KIDSØ is electronic music duo hailing from the southern region of Germany. Formed 2017 in Munich by Moritz Grassinger and Martin Schneider, the band has since been delivering a unique blend of rhythmic, melodic, and experimental electronic music with the touch of the north.
In 2018, KIDSØ released their debut album 'Apart' to critical acclaim, establishing themselves as one of the exciting new acts in electronic music. The album showcased their signature sound, which is characterized by a seamless blend of various styles and organic elements, including vocal samples, atmospheric soundscapes, and infectious rhythms. The release of "Apart" was followed by a string of successful live performances, which took KIDSØ from Amsterdam and Poland to various festivals and club shows around Germany.
Straight back in the groove ‘Better Days’ featuring ROBINS (Angie Robba), KIDSØ make their way back to the German capital for their upcoming single ‘Melting’, out on 19 April via Embassy One. Further solidifying their reputation for connecting the dots between electronic music and singer-songwriting, Grassinger and Schneider join forces with Cracovian artist Helaine Vis. The Munich duo talk to 6AM about their latest collaborative release along with their future plans.
Hi KIDSØ! Thanks for talking to 6AM how are you both?
We are in a very good mood because we have had a very nice show in Munich and have a lot of new songs almost finished
KIDSØ, your new track ‘Melting’ with Helaine Vis has a notable tech house vibe that carries a strong emotional punch. Could you share more about how you achieve this balance between dancefloor readiness and deep emotional resonance in your music production?
Before KIDSØ we both played in various classic band projects. We are not typical electronic producers. It therefore automatically follows that we don't just compose with the dance floor in mind, but that the emotions and melodies are very important to us. When songs are finished, we always let them play to videos of Nordic landscapes and see what emotions they trigger in us.
The story behind ‘Melting’ indicates a natural and exciting collaboration with Helaine Vis. What aspects of Helaine's artistry made her the perfect fit for this track, and how did her unique vocal style influence the final sound?
Helaine has a very expressive voice, which quickly set the direction of the song based on the lyrics. The mood of the vocals is very melancholic, which we love. We also really liked the rhyme “Ice in his Eyes”.
For this particular track why was there a strong emphasis on melodic restraint in ‘Melting’? Why did that play a key part in the message and lyrics of the track?
We think that the melodic restraint makes Helaine's beautiful vocals stand out better.
The lyrics in ‘Melting’ evoke a vivid sense of nostalgia and regret. What personal experiences or stories inspired these lyrics, and how do you approach the process of translating such deep emotions into music?
We prefer it when the vocals are already there and we can build a song around them. So we can be inspired by the vocals. We experiment a lot with the vocals. We try out different variations of the vocals until it suits us emotionally and the vocals come into their own best.
What can your fans expect from your future projects? Are there any other artistic elements or collaborations you are exploring to evolve your signature sound further?
We currently have 11 new songs almost finished. Some of the new songs are more in the direction of our songs like “Childhood” or “Hologram”. So more joy of life and energy. We used different voices from around the world. Stay tuned!
Thanks so much for talking to us, is there anything else you would like to add?
Don't lose heart in these crazy and sometimes depressing times!
